Although the weather hasn’t really delivered over the August bank holiday, it’s still a lovely time to get out on a bracing coastal walk. A beautiful route in Cornwall has been named one of the country’s best.
The expert team of walkers at Fitflop have shared the UK’s best coastal walks, ideal for families looking to get out and exercise at the end of the summer holidays.
According to the team, one of England’s prettiest coastal routes is a 30 mile trek from Perranporth to St Ives, along the Cornwall Atlantic Coast.
A Fitflop spokesperson said: “A great choice for wildlife lovers, this trail takes in rugged cliff tops and mining landscapes, with the chance to see seals, sunfish and basking sharks below, or guillemots and razorbills above.
“From Portreath you’ll pass Ralph’s Cupboard, a cove favoured by smugglers to hide their loot, the rolling sand dunes at Gwithian and Navax Point where the seals gather, cross Hayle’s 100-year-old swing bridge and finish off in the postcard-perfect town of St Ives – the perfect spot for an ice cream!”

Ralph’s Cupboard is thought to have been a huge sea cave, until the roof collapsed, leaving a pretty cove in its place. Some local residents believe Ralph was a famous smuggler operating on the Cornish coast.
Upton Towans Beach sits just outside Gwithian village and its rolling sand dunes make it an attractive spot for a mid-walk relax.
‘Jordan Mariner’ wrote on Google Reviews: “Absolutely beautiful, miles of sand and no rocks. Water is crystal clear.”
‘Fliss Walker’ wrote: “One of the nicest beaches in Cornwall. Perfect for families in summer. Look out for the large and deep rock pools at low tide, perfect for kids to play and swim in.”

St Ives is one of Cornwall’s most attractive seaside towns and it’s also one of the region’s most popular holiday destinations. The town is an arty hotspot and is home to Tate St Ives.
The town’s harbour beach is just steps from its shops and restaurants, making it the perfect spot to sit and eat an ice-cream or fish and chips.
A tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “The harbour beach is so pretty, there is so much to do from walks, beach, boat hire, seal watching. We love it when the tide is low and you can walk around the harbour beach to Porthminster Beach.”
If a 30 mile walk sounds a little intimidating, tourists could shorten it or visit Cornwall for a staycation and break up the walk into more manageable sections.
Another “beautiful” coastal walk just outside of Liverpool is also catching tourists’ attention and is the perfect stroll for families.
Meanwhile, a 25 mile coastal walk in Dorset has breathtaking views and stops at Durdle Door, one of the UK’s most iconic natural landmarks.
