Spanish hotspot named as this year’s most popular mini break – full list

This year’s top mini-break destinations have been named

Looking for a mini-break? This year’s most popular spots have been unveiled by the travel team at Thomas Cook. While an iconic Spanish resort has claimed the top spot for the second year in a row, Turkey has soared in popularity.

Thomas Cook has seen a rise in families and older travellers heading away for a short break of under five days, with many Brits looking to escape the UK for a mini-break.

Emma King, Thomas Cook’s head of product, said: “While Covid restrictions last year may have played some part in people’s decision-making, Turkey and Salou offer great value for families and couples looking for quick getaways in the sun.

“We can see this year that people have broadened their horizons and value for money has been a priority for many of our customers, so while the Canaries are perfect for year-round sun, other areas have found renewed popularity because they are a little easier on the wallet.”

So where are this year’s leading destinations?

Benidorm

Love it or hate it, Benidorm is a firm British favourite. Millions of Britons travel to the Spanish resort every year and it’s even been named the most British place in Spain.

Spain’s first ever package holiday resort, the destination is known for its nightlife and 2km long Levante Beach. According to the WHO, the Costa Blanca has one of Europe’s healthiest climates so what are you waiting for?

Milatos, Crete

Dreaming of an island escape? It’s no surprise to see gorgeous Milatos on Crete’s northern coast near the top of the hotlist. Tourists can unwind on one of the village’s gorgeous beaches or explore its history on a tour of Milatos Cave.

While in Crete don’t forget to sample a traditional moussaka or kalitsounia.

Albufeira

Perhaps the most beautiful destination in Portugal, Albufeira sits on the country’s Algarve coastline. The former fishing village has grown into a major holiday destination. Join a dolphin watching trip to spot some of the area’s wildlife or unwind on Falesia beach.

Albufeira also has a busy nightlife scene so it’s a great choice for party loving Britons.

Alanya, Turkey

The first Turkish destination on the list, Alanya sits on the stunning Turkish Riviera. It’s known for Cleopatra Beach, where legend says the famous Queen once swam. The beachfront is overlooked by Alanya Castle, a giant fort which now serves as an open-air museum.

Don’t miss the Damlatas Cave with its impressive rock formations.

Salou, Spain

A resort town on Spain’s northeastern Costa Daurada, Salou is known for its strips, Llevant and Ponent. But it’s also got several tucked away coves ideal for swimming.

A favourite among young Britons, the beach destination is home to the PortAventura theme park and has a luminous fountain.
