Beautiful Spanish town with gorgeous beaches named the best place to retire

A beautiful Spanish town with gorgeous beaches has been named among the best places to retire.

Peñíscola is in the Castellon region, on the east coast between Barcelona and Valencia. It is on the Costa del Azahar, the “orange tree coast”.

It is a popular destination for British expats and has been named one of the best places to retire by estate agent Sonneil.

The town is known locally as “the city of the sea” due to its castle being joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of land, much like St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall.

Estate agent Sonneil said that the area offers a “quiet lifestyle away from the noise” that has “all the services and infrastructures necessary” for retirees.

It also said Peñíscola is one of the most beautiful towns in Castellon and is an “ideal place to retire”.

The town has a rich history, with the Castell del Papa Luna built by the Knights Templar in 1294 and once being home to Pope Benedict XIII in the 1300s, who became the castle’s namesake.

Things to do in Peñíscola include visiting the beautiful beaches like Playa Norte and Widowers Beach, trying the local delicacy caragols punxents (snails), or walking in the old town with its cobbled narrow streets full of small shops and cafes.

The town may look familiar to some, having featured on Game of Thrones as Meereen, one of the Slaver’s Bay cities conquered by Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen.

Peñíscola is accessed via flights from London landing in nearby Castellon de la Plana. The town is then an hour’s car journey north.
