Tech tycoon Sam Altman has been booted from the board of OpenAI, the firm behind artificial intelligence bot ChatGPT.
The artificial intelligence company said it "no longer has confidence" in Altman's leadership after he was not "consistently candid with his communications." Announcing the news on social media, the board said it was grateful for Altman's contributions but added it was time for new leadership.
"The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI," the company said. It added the decision came following "a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities."

Altman, 38, also took to social media to express his admiration for the company. "It was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. Most of all I loved working with such talented people," he wrote. "Will have more to say about what's next later."
OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman also announced he would be stepping down from his post following the news. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Brockman wrote: "I'm super proud of what we've all built together since starting in my apartment eight years ago.

Altman, 38, helped to launch the firm as a non-profit in 2015 โ alongside, among others, Brockman and billionaire X boss Elon Musk โ and saw it become one of the best-known AI companies globally. During his time there, OpenAI launched the world-famous chatbot ChatGPT, renowned for its ability to respond to questions and statements with eerily human-like replies.
Millions of people have taken to the bot's website to try it out, with plenty now using it for work purposes. However the brand has also attracted controversy and even faced legal action from writers who believe ChatGPT developed its AI capabilities from their work, which they have argued is a breach of copyright law.
