Cliffside hotel clings on for life after being battered by elements for 20 years

A cliffside hotel is battling for survival after being battered by the elements for 20 years.

Hotel Ponale, overlooks a crystal blue Italian lake and has been left to rot for more than two decades. It has been dubbed 'Casa della Trota' (which translates as 'Trout House') and is located in the hamlet of Biacesa along the stretch of Lake Garda in Italy.

The once popular attraction gained fame due to its position and cuisine and visitors to the restaurant were able to enjoy fresh trout caught directly from the lake, while dining between the lake and mountains. Over the years, the structure has expanded transforming the building, owned by Francesca Cicciarello and her husband Emanuele Lazzara, from a restaurant to a hotel.

The building is part of the history of Alto Garda tourism, and has welcomed many illustrious names over the years to enjoy the unique location.

Regardless of any alterations to the site, the name has remained a constant throughout its history, to carry with it the roots and history that characterise the unique place.

The history of this renowned location can reportedly be traced back to approximately 1600, and written records from 1830 are said to verify its existence.

Francesca's family acquired ownership of the establishment, transferring the management and all associated duties from one generation to the next.

After enduring years of bureaucratic hurdles, she and her spouse have finally obtained the license to refurbish this location and start breathing life back into the site.

For more than two decades, the restaurant-turned-hotel was left to rot, but the couple in charge of the restoration project are determined to revive the site and bring it back to its former glory.
