Christopher McGovern, Chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said: โThe huge increase in recorded classroom violence is shocking.
โMore shocking is that the data made public only represents the tip of the iceberg. Schools are actually very reluctant to suspend or expel pupils or even to record incidents of violence.
โThey are concerned about presenting the school in a good light so that they are not marked down by Ofsted inspectors. The growing numbers of teachers leaving the profession is testimony to the breakdown of order in many schools.
"Educational Armageddon is closer than most people realise in some schools. Schools, after all, are a microcosm of what is happening on our streets.โ
A Department for Education spokesperson said: โWe back heads to use suspensions and permanent exclusions where required as part of behaviour management, so they can provide calm, safe, and supportive environments where both pupils and staff can work in safety and are respected.
โWe have issued updated statutory guidance making clear that early intervention should be put in place where pupils are at risk of being permanently excluded and entering alternative provision, and have invested ยฃ10 million in the Behaviour Hubs programme to support schools to improve behaviour.โ
In nursery classes, 34 children were suspended for attacking another child and 59 for assaulting a teacher.
In reception, which starts aged four, 2,439 children were suspended for attacking a teacher. Another 28 teacher assaults by this age group were considered so bad the child was expelled for good.
