Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine “could go on for years,” Artificial Intelligence has claimed in a chilling prediction.
Putin first ordered his troops to invade neighbouring Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and claimed it would only take him 72 hours to take the country. But a defiant Ukraine has been fighting back ever since, and has reclaimed much of Russia's gains during the war, despite Putin's insistence that he will not stop until Ukraine has been “de-Nazified”.
And with the war raging on, the Daily Star turned to Google's newly-updated AI-powered Bard software to figure out how and when it could end . . . and the predictions are not very promising for either side.

Bard came up with three possible outcomes for an end – negotiated pace, a Russian victory or a Ukrainian victory – but claimed that working with “unpredictable” Putin could prove a stumbling block for two out of the three options.
And, it said: "When Putin's invasion will end is also difficult to say. It could be months, or even years. It all depends on how the war develops, and whether either side is willing to make concessions."
“The most likely outcome is a negotiated settlement, in which both sides make concessions in order to end the conflict. This could involve Ukraine agreeing to some form of neutrality, or Russia withdrawing from some of the territory it has occupied.
“However, even if both sides are willing to negotiate, it could take a long time to reach an agreement. There are many complex issues to resolve, and both sides have strong positions. Additionally, Putin has shown himself to be unpredictable and unwilling to compromise.

“It is also important to note that a negotiated settlement would not be easy to achieve. Both sides have strong positions, and there is a lot of mistrust between them. However, it is the only way to end the war and bring peace to Ukraine.”
Bard even pinpointed some of the possible points of a settlement that both sides would have to agree to.
They are:
-
A Russian withdrawal from some or all of the territory it has occupied in Ukraine.
-
A Ukrainian commitment to neutrality, meaning that it would not join NATO or any other military alliance.
-
A demilitarization of Ukraine, meaning that it would reduce its military forces to a certain level.
-
A recognition of Crimea as Russian territory.
-
A recognition of the Donbas region as an autonomous region within Ukraine.
-
A guarantee of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity.
-
Reparations from Russia to Ukraine for the damage caused by the war.
Bard claims that a Russian victory in Ukraine would likely involve the following:
-
The overthrow of the Ukrainian government and the installation of a pro-Russian government in Kyiv.
-
The demilitarization of Ukraine, meaning that it would be forced to reduce its military forces to a certain level.
-
The declaration of Crimea as Russian territory.
-
The recognition of the Donbas region as an independent state.
-
Ukraine's commitment to neutrality, meaning that it would not join NATO or any other military alliance.

However, it goes on to explain: “A Russian victory would also have significant implications for the global order. It would show that Russia is willing to use military force to achieve its objectives, and that it is not afraid to challenge the West. It would also undermine the principle of international law and the sovereignty of nations..
“Overall, a Russian victory in Ukraine would have a profound impact on both Ukraine and the world. It would be a setback for democracy and the rule of law, and it would embolden other authoritarian regimes. It is important to do everything possible to prevent a Russian victory and to help Ukraine achieve a just and lasting peace.”
The AI-powered software claimed that a Ukrainian victory would hinge on four factors.
-
The withdrawal of all Russian forces from Ukraine, including Crimea and the Donbas region.
-
The restoration of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity.
-
The prosecution of Russian war criminals.
-
Reparations from Russia to Ukraine for the damage caused by the war.

It explained: “A Ukrainian victory would also have significant implications for the global order. It would show that Russia can be defeated, and that the West is willing to stand up to aggression.
“It would also send a message to other authoritarian regimes that they cannot violate international law with impunity. Despite the challenges, a Ukrainian victory is possible . . . and would be a victory for democracy and the rule of law.
“It would also be a victory for the Ukrainian people, who have shown incredible courage and determination in the face of Russian aggression.”
