    A major incident has been declared after a huge explosion at an industrial estate this evening.

    The blast occurred at Treforest Industrial Estate in South Wales. South Wales Police have closed the surrounding area and local NHS services are now on high alert.

    A police spokesman said: "We are at the scene of a serious incident on Severn Road, Treforest. The roads will be closed around the area of Treforest Industrial Estate and is expected to remain closed for some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.

    "We are at the scene of a serious incident on Severn Road, Trefforest. The roads are closed around the area of Trefforest Industrial Estate and are expected to remain closed for some time. It is a illegal for anyone to fly any drones at the location unless permission has been given by the scene Commander."

    And the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has warned locals to avoid going to the hospital unless necessary. Despite no confirmation of causalities, a spokesman said: "Due to the ongoing incident at Treforest Ind Estate this evening, all of our emergency departments are currently on high alert.

    "Please help us by not attending A & E unless absolutely necessary. We need to be able to provide care to those who need it the most."

    Several reports claim that around 15 police cars and 10 ambulances attended the scene, with locals telling WalesOnline that concern had been expressed about the large pet shop next door to the blaze. Charlotte Preen, a football coach, said one of her groups was training nearby when she heard an explosion.

    She told WalesOnline: "The building shook, and a lot of moisture came from the ceiling. It was very strong. Some of the players were quite concerned, obviously realising it sounded a bit louder than a firework. We've been updated that there was some form of serious explosion in the industrial estate. Parents found it really difficult to pick up their children [after the session], unfortunately."

    Nearly two hours after the blaze was first reported, huge plumes of smoke were seen billowing into the night sky, but no cause for the blast has yet emerged.

    The Daily Star has reached out to South Wales Police for a comment.
