Meghan Markle is said to be eyeing up a drastic career change – which could see her rake in a whopping £143k a year.
The Duchess of Sussex has been working hard to establish herself as an A-list personality since stepping down from royal duties in 2020 and moving to the US alongside husband Prince Harry. Since then the pair have secured – and lost – lucrative media contracts through their brand Archewell and published a number of Netflix series, with Meghan also releasing her own Spotify podcast.
But the ex-Suits star has now been tipped for a move to politics and could even replace a California senator who recently passed away. Meghan could run for the seat formerly held by Dianne Feinstein, who died on Friday (September 29) at the age of 90.

A Democratic Party donor close to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is in charge of selecting Ms Feinstein's replacement, told the Mail on Sunday "crazier things have happened". "Meghan is definitely a long shot but in the craziness that is US politics these days it's not an impossibility," the insider said.
Sources from California's political spheres said phones "lit up" following Ms Feinstein's death with rumours Meghan could make the run to replace her. It's not the first time the former royal has made her interest in politics known, either.
In September 2020, an insider told Vanity Fair: "One of the reasons [Meghan] was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics." Early the next year, a Democratic strategist told The Times Meghan was "definitely putting her toe in the water" and following a "well-worn path" previously trodden by other celebs-turned-politicians, such as former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Prince Harry and Meghan want to be 'taken seriously ' but 'failed to back with work'
If Meghan were to bag the new gig, it would see her rake in some £143k a year (USD $174k). While this may sound like an impressive sum to most, royal commentator Daniela Elser said the salary might leave Meghan and Harry wanting more.
Writing for news.com.au, she pointed out Meghan's possible political earnings would likely only be enough to pay for "one of the Sussexes’ retinue team of bodyguards at most." She added: "While the couple has banked oodles of money thanks to Spotify, Netflix and Harry’s book, their peak earning years may very well be behind them with their cultural currency close to having totally petered out."
"Thus, someone is going to need to be pulling in serious dough to keep the House of Montecito chugging along in the years to come."
With just one Netflix doc allegedly in the works, Elser doesn't think Prince Harry has enough eggs in his own basket to support the Sussex clan. "Is it really like to be Harry and his reported African conservation doco?" she added.
