School bus driver killed with girl in M53 crash had ‘medical issue’ behind wheel

The school bus driver killed in a horror crash on the M53 yesterday (September 30) had suffered from "medical issues" behind the wheel before he died.

Stephen Shrimpton's family believe he "suffered medical issues" at the wheel just moments before the crash, which tragically took the life of 15-year-old girl Jessica Baker. A total of 17 others were rushed to hospital following the crash.

More than 50 schoolchildren were on the coach. Stephen is believed to have suffered from an unexplained medical emergency, according to his family writing on a GoFundMe page.

Said GoFundMe page was launched as a way to raise funds for Stephen's funeral. His sister-in-law Emily said Stephen leaves behind a widow in her 30s and two children aged four and eight. The Mirror reported.

She wrote: "I'm raising some funds for my brother-in-law's funeral. He tragically died in an accident on the M53 on the morning of the 29th of September, after suffering medical issues at the wheel while driving students to school.

"He's sadly left behind my sister whoโ€™s now a widow in her early thirties, and unfortunately a single mum alongside his much loved two young children, only 8 and 4, who are going to grow up without their beloved father."

A major incident was declared yesterday following the crash with emergency services rushing to the scene in Wirral, Merseyside, just after 8am. Police said a total of 58 people were on board when the coach crashed.

Four of the 58 had been rushed straight to hospital while the others were taken to a makeshift triage centre. From the triage, 13 more were sent to hospital while 39 students were discharged, according to the North West Ambulance Service.

Merseyside Police are now appealing for any witnesses and drivers who may have dashcam footage of the incident to come forward. Post mortems of the two crash victims are expected to be conducted next week.

The Daily Star previously reported the tragic news of the crash, with Jessica Baker confirmed as the other victim of the crash late yesterday from police statement.
