Snow warning as -20c Scandinavian ‘cold pool’ set to batter UK

The UK is heading for a frosty period as temperatures as low as -20C are brought in by a "cold pool" from Scandinavia.

A rain-bearing low-pressure system is set to meet a "blocking" high-pressure system over Norway and Sweden in the coming few days, where it will then stall over the UK. One meteorologist said the weather event could bring conditions similar to those seen during Storm Babet earlier this month.

Northern parts of the country are predicted to experience an early cold snap as temperatures plummet and snow has been forecast, reports GB News. Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: "It is looking similar to Storm Babet, and that means there is going to be more rain, especially for Scotland. The continued wet weather is the result of the sea temperatures remaining higher than normal after the summer heat.

"This ploughs energy into the atmosphere, and much like a pan of water on the stove, moisture evaporates and turns to rain," he added. "There is a bit of a wintry element to this, with northern regions including Scotland possibly going to feel colder as we go through next week with the risk of frosts and some wintriness over higher ground."

The Daily Star previously reported heavy rains were likely across parts of the country. Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud warned the start of the week could bring downpours just a week after many areas were hit by flooding. "On it's own the rainfall totals are not that high but given the fact we've had all that rain from Storm Babet it doesn't take much for there to be localised impacts because the ground is already saturated," he said.

Yellow weather warnings for wind and rain are in place across various parts of the UK from today (Sunday, October 29) until midnight on Thursday, November 2. It comes after much of the country was devastated by flooding and heavy winds during Storm Babet, which claimed the lives of at least nine people.
