Top Hamas chief killed in Gaza as Israeli forces close in on terror group

A top Hamas commander has been killed by an Israeli airstrike.

Jehad Mheisen was the commander National Security Forces in Gaza led by the group, which was designated a terrorist organisation by the UK in 2021. According to reports not yet verified but backed up by Hamas, Mheisen was killed while at home with his family in Sheikh Radwan, Gaza City.

Jamila Abdallah Taha al-Shanti, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, was also killed according to Israeli media reports. The deaths mark the latest in a string of Hamas member assassinations since Israel vowed to eliminate the organisation following its surprise onslaught 12 days ago.

It comes on the same day Prime Minister Rishi Sunak travelled to Israel and pledged to support the country. He said in a joint press conference with the nation's PM, Benjamin Netanyahu: "In the last two weeks, this country has gone through something that no country, no people should have to endure, least of all Israel which has lived through some of the most awful scenes, the spectre of violence and terrorism every day of its existence.

"We absolutely support Israel's right to defend itself in line with international law, to go after Hamas, to take back hostages, to deter further incursions, and to strengthen your security for the long term. I know that you are taking every caution to avoid harming civilians, in direct contrast with the terrorists of Hamas, which seeks to put civilians in harm's way."
