Tragedy as theatergoer dies during screening of The Exorcist: Believer

A theatergoer was found dead during a screening of The Exorcist:Believer after he failed to exit his seat as the credits began to roll.

The tragedy unfolded in Peru’s capital, Lima on Monday night – leaving locals in a state of shock.

The Santa Elizabeth police station in San Juan de Lurigancho neighborhood received the grim report.

Police chief John Yumpo told reporters homicide detectives are investigating the unusual circumstances.

Peruvian police have yet to identify the deceased man.

Yumpo said: “It is an unusual case, we have never found something similar before, a deceased person in a movie theater.”

The exact cause remains unknown, with autopsy results pending.

Local television stations captured the scene at the Cineplanet movie theater, with a police van transporting the deceased in a black bag.

Cineplanet, the movie theater chain where the incident occurred, expressed their condolences in a statement.

The statement read: “The Cineplanet company mourns the death of one of its clients…The corresponding protocols were activated immediately, and we are committed to providing the pertinent information [to police] in the midst of this painful situation.”

The Exorcist: Believer directed by David Gordon Green, was released in early October in the United States and serves as a sequel to the iconic 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin.

The movie earned Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions $27.2 million in North America in its opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.
